    Recently a significant design for establishing a system of geographical science was put forward by Mr.Qian Xuesen,chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology,and nationwide geographers are having an animated disscussion on the subject.This article can be regarded as a written speech,in which the writer expresses his enthusiastic response to Mr.Qian's appeal.Meanwhile,according to what he gained from studying contemporary geography,he tries to explain and extend in some degree to the connotations of geographical science Finally,in the conclusion.It 1sconfirmed that the establishment of the Geographical Science System surely play an important role in the new development of contemporary geography.

    According to specific data,the predictive values of the yields of main crops,cultivated areas and population in Guangdong province in 2000 are calculated by using mathematical model in this paper.In order to calculate the greatest bearing.capacity of land,the structure models of closing type and opening type are set up respectively.The consumption level which is slightly lower than that of Japan in early 1980's is taken as a standard of the food structure and the linear program-ming method is applied in it.The conclusion is that the bearing capacity of land in Guangdong Province in 2000 is about 58.76 million persons in the closing type system and about 62.15 million persons in the opening one.The countermeasures on the balance of supply and demand and improvement on the bearing capacity of land in 2000 are discussed in detail.

    Guangdong was short of grain in history.Its production of grain had been developed rapidly since its liberation and it had become one of the provinces exporting grain before 1975.However,it has needed to import grain due to some reasons since 1977.Guangdong is possessed of the conditions built up the commodity production bases of grain.The policy of the grain ration being supplied and forage being imported should be carried out.The commodity production bases of grain in the whole province may be divided into 3 classifications,16 types.It is necessary to regulate the distribution of grain crops,to stress well the region of the middle or low output,to concentrate and increase the investment,to expand management scale,and to spread the contracting out system of agricultural technical personnel.

    The research on agricultural climate is very important to 1imestone areas because of its bad natural environment and less developed economy.In this paper,the distributive models of thermal resources in the limestone mountain district of North Guangdong Province such as Yangshan County are calculated.It is found that the environment and topography have a large effect on thermal distribution besides elevation and even surpass that of latitude.after analysing the layout ofagricultural crops in Yangshan by applying th thermal models,some results are got as follows: 1.The maximum planting altitude of double harvest rice is 500m,but its economic benefit is better below 300m.2.The limitary altitude of ingle harvest rice is about 1000m.3.The reverse-season planting vegetables such as tomato and cayenne pepper should be arranged above 600m.4.The plentiful local climatic resources should be put to good use for the rational distribution of crops.

    The water supply-demand condition at praesent(in 1988)and the supply-demand balance in 2000 in Maoming City are caculated and analysed in this paper.The conclusion is drawn that water supply have a surplus at present but it will be short in future(in 2000).According to the condition of water supply,the way of water use at present,the distribution of industry in the longrange and the plan of city development,four measures to solve water supply are put forward:(1)to reinforce the Gaozhou Reservoir and resume its designed capacity,(2)to raise the rate of the repetition of water use in order to reduce the amount of water use,(3)to strengthen anti-seepage of the industry canals so as to decrease water loss,(4)to open the new sources of water for replenishing water supply.

    There are great differences in starting conditions among Hainan Island,the special economic zones and the economic and technological development districts in our county,and "the Four Small Dragons" in Asia.By means of analysing the postwar economic circumstances which are of universal law,the superiority of the special economic zone is thought the major superiority of Hainan Island.The superiority includes the natural resources and the geographical location.It is necessary fo.r us to give play to the superiority to develop the exportoriented economy.As for giving full play to geographical location,the problems on the investment,the talent and the devolopment models must be solved.The basic superiority of Hainan Island is the natural resources.It is very important to rely on the superiority to develop the products which is necessary for our country and can replace the imports.

    In this paper,the natural geographical features at Xinglong district is recounted and the physiological and ecological influences of light,heat as well as water conditions on the socalled "South Medicine Herb" such as Areca cathecn L.Alpiitia oxyplzylla Miq.,Moriruta officinalis How.and Amomum aillosum Lour.are analysed,The authors suggest that effective measures be adopted to protect and use the rich "South Medicine-Herbs" resources in this district.

    According to the experiment at Guilinyang Farm,it can be successful that fallow double-cropping of rice paddy fields in winte is used for planting morgane under the following conditions:Absolute minimum temperature is above 10℃ and mean temperature from 18℃ to 25℃;the fallow winter period of paddy fields is more than eighty-five days;the facilities of irrigation and drainage are perfect;the planting measures are taken properly.

    The soil vertical distribution of soils in Hainan Province is:Mountain Meadow Soil-Yellow Soil-Lateritic Red Soil-Laterite.According to the results of soil survey in Hainan Province from 1979 to 1986 and the classification system of Soils of China in 1988,seven grades which include order suborder,great group,subgroup,family,species and subspecies,will be used in the soil classification system of Hainan Province.The author holds the following opinion:(1)there is Lateritic Red Soil subgroup because of younger soil-foriming ages,(2)the Red Calcareous Soil should be classified as iron-alumina soil order because ther is an ironalumina layer in it,and(3)the Garden Mould,where there is an artificia mature soil layer,should be incorporated into man-made soil order.

    New industrial economic states in Asia(NIES)are the main exporting bases of industrial products in economic development of Asia and Pacific areas.Their experiences in economic growth are very helpful to the development and construction of the coastal areas in China.The main points of the experiences are as follows.First,always lay stress on exportorientated economy in their developing industry.Second,adjust appropriately the structure of export goods in accordance with the changes and trends of the trade in international market.Third,export various products in good quality and cheap prices through different manners in order to occupy more international markets,especially the markets in developed countries.And last; each state or area possesses a few its own prominent products through taking advantages of its own special conditions.So the speeds of the economic growth in these areas or countries could keep fast in the dull circumstance of the world economies in late years.
