  • ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN GEOGRAPHY AND CONSTRUCTION GEOGRAPHY

    Construction geography has been an inevitable outcome from the development of modern geography.With the economic modernization in many countries and regions over the world,more and more attention has been paid to the geographic study of regional development.Construction geography was put forward in the 1940s.Its theory and method have been being improved by the studies of geographers from different countries for nearly a century.It may be considered as highly integrated geography with a study object of large systems of regional nature,society and economy,and may be taken as a branch of geography science system raised by Professor Qian Xuesen.Physical geography should be the basis of construction geography,it can play an important role in study of construction geography by way of setting up its ojective system and adhereing to integrated study of region as a whole system.The study field of construction geography should be made on the basis of regional divisions.For example,coastal-estuarine research area of construction geography may include the following study items:(1)coastal engineering environment system;(2)port engineering system;(3)natural resources system;(4)port-city system;(5)regional planning system;(6)legislative management of coastal zone,and so on.

    The relics of the Quaternary glaciation such as glacial landform,moraine boulder clay,and moraine placer gold deposit etc.in Fengkai-Huaiji region of Northwest Guangdong are quite obvious.The comparison between the chemical composition and microelements of the moraine boulder clay and those of the interglacial sediment indiGates that the moraine boulder clay was formed in a damp and cold environment. The ratio of illite/kaolinte in the moraine deposit is much higher than that in the alluvial deposit,which is also a corroborative evidence for the existence of the glaciation.The paleotemperature of the glaciation is estimated at -4.76-11.20℃ according to the ratios of Fe3+/Fe2+ of some specimens of moraine deposit.The obvious relics of glaciation can be observed on the surface of quartz grains in the moraine diposit through scanning electron microscope.Flat-lying rotten wood (carbonized wood)of Glyptostrobus pensilis is widely distributed at the upper part of the Laopo alluvium(Q),and its 14C age is 13090±420 a B. P.,Showing that the rotten wood was formed after the close of the Warm glaciation.The spore-pollen assemblages in moraine deposit indicates the damp cold climate in general.

    Limestone mountain region in Guangdong is the poorest region in the province.The productive potentialities and population bearing capacity of land in the region are very low due to poor environment and lack of natural resources.The improvement and exploitation of the region are very difficult.It is necessary to work out measures to tackle the difficult problems in a comprehensive way.Firstly,begin with the bio-measure to improve the ecological environmrnt,and to reserve water resources.Secondly,develop water-saved agriculture and commodity agriculture,and make use of other resources.Meanwhile,control population growth and even migrate some residents to other areas from the limestone mountain region in order to reduce the population presure to land.

    Nansha is a new hot spot for investment emerging from the west flank of the Zhu jiang Delta.It possesses the main conditions of becoming a development core:the conditions of developing starting industry,good conditions in land and water use,favourable geographic position,etc..Now it has become a trade port in China.The author considersthat the major superiority in Nansha is its port.Based on port exploitation,near-sea industry and tourism consisting of solf,horse-racing and yachting should be great1y developed,and finally evolved the area into a comprehensive and muti-functional foreign economic zone.Two development aims are set up in this paper.The lower one is mainly to develop foreign processing industry,trade and tourism on taking port construction and tourism as a breach.The higher one is on the basis of its port construction and tourism development,to construct near-sea industry of raw material producing such as steel and petrochemicals.

    The conditions and characteristics of the economic growth,and the level and struc of consumption in the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Corridor are analysed.The corridory has the following advantages for its economic growth:lying closely to Hong Kong;near the South China Sea and the east coast of the Zhujiang River-mouth abundant in resources of oil and gas;having a historical base and a cultural background for opening to the outside world.The economic growth in the area is characterized by that,(1)It is of rapid rate and many kinds of models of economic structure;(2)It is an important information centre throughout China;(3)The establishment of export-orientated economy attracts a great amount of mobile population,providing cheap labour forces for erzterprises. The consumption level in the area is high,and the consumption structure has been changed greatly.The expenses on housing and so on are increasing.The author considers that the economic growth in the corridor has close connection with real estate,it is beneficial to the development of the real estate market,to rising funds for building of commodity houses and their selling,to promoting the reformation of housing systerns.It turn the prosperity of real estate stimulates the economic growth.
  • A PRELIMINARY STUDY ON FLOOD DISASTER IN THE ZHUJIANG DELTA AND ITS CONTROL

    The Zhujiang Delta is an area of the densest population and the most developed economy in Guangdong Province.The flood and waterlogging disasters are major restriction factors of the economic development in the area.The disaster on the Zhu jiang Delta possesses outstanding characteristics:the flood season lasts for a long time in a year,the flood and waterlogging occur frequently over years,and the losses caused by the disasters are increasing.Natural factors and artificial factors are the causes of the formation of flood and waterlogging.According to the analysis of the flood control conditions at present,some ideas for controlling flood and waterlogging in a comprehensive way are advanced:(1)to reinforce the existing water conservancy facilities,(2)to do well the work of retain water in upper reaches and sluicing in lower reaches of a river,(3)to strengthen water and soil conservation,(4)to build flood diversion channels,(5)to set up flood detention basins,(6)to enhance hydrological observations and weather forecast,(7)to manage the basin further in a comprehensive way.

    949 natural disasters from the 21th Zhenguan (647 A.D.)of Tang Dynasty to 1985 in Fujian coast areas are analysed.Twelve kinds of disasters,including flood,typhoon,drought,sea overflow,snow and ice,cold wave,hail,tornado,soil erosion,sand-driving wind,and earthquake resulted in heavy losses.The disasters are characterized by their variousness,heavy damages and quasi-periodicity.It is found that the occur-rence of disasters has close relationship with solar activity.The authors have some ideas on disaster control:(1)Carry out the policy of putting prevention first;(2)Combine stopgap measures with permanent measures;(3)Combine the development with the management;(4)Set up a perfect system of disaster control;(5)Strenthen horizontalties to resist disasters.

    According to the analysis of a great number of historical and measuring data,the characteristics of torrential rain and flood in the Qiantangjiang basin are revealed as follows:(1)The torrential synoptic systems principally consist of plum rain front and tropical cyclon;(2)Torrential rain is mainly concentrated in summer and autumn during the months from May to June and from August to September;(3)The maximum rainfall is lower than that recorded in China or abroad,and its distribution closely relates to topography;(4)The flood duration is momentary with the flood level rapidly rises and falls,and the flood varies every year;(5)The flood damages in the Lanjiang and Xin'anjiang Rivers are the worst of the area;(6)The flood years are more concentrated,and their periods are not identical.

    Huaihua Municipality,situated in West Hunan,is rich in mountain land,heat and water resources.The vertical variation of climate is obvious,and "warm regions" and "warm belts" occasionally occur in the mountain areas.It is advantageous for stereo-distribution of agriculture.The authors consider that comprehensive development of mountain land resources,with that of forestry as dominant factor,is the focal point of the utilization of natural resources in the municipality. It is suggested to make full use of the climate resources,to develop forestry greatly,to exploit hydro-power,and to develop stereoagriculture in the mountain areas.

    Based on the features of ecological environment of farmland in tropical and subtropical plain areas of South China,from the angles of hygienic toxicology and ecology,a Weighted-Pollution-Index method on assessment of environmental quality of farmland polluted by pesticide is studied in this paper.The way of caculating weight index of evaluation fators from absorption index of plant and erosion index of pesticide in soil is advanced.The author considers that the environment assessment standard of pesticide pollutants(BHC and DDT)in soil should be determined by ecological environment features of plain areas in South China,and it is of regionality and zonality.Therefore,single standard is not good for different regions.The standard in tropical and subtropical zones should be more stringent than in North China.

    According to the analysis of the present condition of tropical rain forest in Xishuangbanna,it is considered that the sharp decrease of tropical rain forest and degradation of ecological environment in the area mainly result from slash and burn cultivation,forest-destroyed cultivation and huge consumption of fuel wood.Therefore the five strategic measures for recovery and development of tropical rain forest in the area are put forward:(1)to solve the problems of slash and burn cultivation and forest-destroyed cultivation,and to improve the agricultural distribution on flatland;(2)to develop fuel forest as to settle rural energy problem;(3)to build a stereoscopic forestry system of ecological economy;(4)to develop international tourism districts,combining with the development of the rain forest;(5)to solve rationally the problem of invesment in tropical rain forest.

    Tonggu Hill is located in eastern suburbs of Guangzhou,at the economic corridor of Guangzhou-Shenzhen,covering an area of 2.5 km2.It has advantageous geographical position.According to the analysis of tourism resources of Tonggu Hill,its location condition,urban construction and environment protection,some ideas about its development model,garden and afforestation projects and tourism agriculture are conceived in this paper.The authors suggest that Tonggu Hill could be divided into six functional districts,and the three kinds of tourism resources,including temples,fruit forest and stone landscape,should be first exploited,and then other scenic spots.Finally,Tonggu Hill would be built into a tourism area with green hills,clear water,gardens,tempies,fruit forest,stone landscape and caves.
