Zhaoqing Prefecture is situated in the middle-west of Guangdong Province, China, covering an area of 22825 km2, with a population of 5.08 million. In this paper, based on the analysis and evaluation of the natural resources and the socio-economic conditions of the prefecture, three economic regions, the East, the South, and the North, are deliminated, and a strategy of "clock-wise advancing" for economic development is suggested. The key problems of the development of major sectors are discussed. Five principal industrial circles are proposed to be distributed: comprehensive (food, machine, electronic, etc.) industry, chemical industry (esp. that of forest products), textile industry, building materials industry, and wood and bamboo processing and paper-making industry.

Chenghai county, being situated in the east of the Hanjiang delta, is closed to the Shantou SEZ and enjoy the all favourable policies of the open coastal areas of Guangdong province. There is plenty of labour force, with a population density of 1700 person per square kilometer, in the region. The county is also the famous, home-town of oversee Chinese. According to the fast economic development in the last few years, its urbanization process is expected to accelerate. In 1987, there are 13 towns in the region and the urban population account for 18% of the total population on the base of resent vital statistics system of census registration. In fact, the people who actuelly live in the towns have taken up 32% of the total population which is much higher then that of the national and provincial average proportion. In 2000, the proportion of urban population in the county is expected to be 50-60% which shows that the county is at a higher level of urbanization than that of the others. Till that time a urban system will develop with a central urban of Cheng City which is also the satellite town of Shantou and the size of the town will be 150 thousand persons. Dongli, Lianyang, Waisha and Longdu are the subcentre towns of the system and their sizes will be from 30-100 thousand persons. To realize the system, the front structure including transportation, water and electricity supply, and telecommunication is necessary to be relatively constructed.

The construction of a SOOOton port is one of the most urgent problems for Shanwei City to solve presently. The outer-sea channel in existence is a changeable one, which can not be selected to dredge for a 5000ton port. In this paper, being based on the historical evolution process of lagoon-inlet system, characteristics of tidal currents and waves and geologic conditions, a study on how to choose an ideal channel to dredge has been made, and also, a conclusion that the channel in the linking-up line of two buoys along the coast is the best choice has been reached.

There are twenty seven kinds of heavy minerals identified in the low reaches of the Beijiang River. The main proportion of stable heavy minerals which coqst.itute fundamental combinations can not show the significant vareations along the river. Ranging from up to down, four heavy-mineral combinations have been formed under certain hydrodynamic conditions and separated by specific gravity and shape, each of which reflects different sedimentation environments and hydrodynamic characteritics.

In the paper, the distribution characteristics of the different sediment in each bay are analyzed according to the fieldwork and the data of mineral, grain size and micropaleo-organism. Effected by land forms and coast features, the sediments are different in the east and the west. The eastern sediments are mainly composed of fine and coarse sand and the western, fine sand, silt and clay. There is a strong correlation between the content of heavy mineral and the grain size type of sediment. The east is composed of tourmaline-zircon-ilmenite and the west, ilmenite-zircon-tourmaline. The accumulation of the bay depends on the proportion of the silt discharge of river to the capacity of bay. According to the intensity of accumulation, the bays are put in order as follows: Nanliu River Dealt, Dafeng River Mouth, Chinzhou Bay, Fangcheng Bay and Tieshan Port.

Yingde Precious Crystal Palace is a well-developed cave composed of three stages. Abundant palynomorph and diatom fossils are found in trial boring Z21 that is settled in the second hall on the lowest cave, in which pollens are rich in pines and then are frequent with Salix, podocarpus and Magnolia, spores are frequent with polypodiaceae, Alhyrium, Microlopia and Osmunde, and diatoms are rich in Cymbella,Navicula,Couonies and Melosira etc. According to this micro-palaeo-flora, we conclude that the sediments of the cave were probably formed at Holocene, when the cave was submerged by lakes and the nearby hills were covered by subtropical conifers dominantly the Pine-Cypress grown under temperate and humid climates.

The sediment brought by river at estuary causes the development of estuary coast. Remote sensing offers a useful means in monitoring the dynamic changes of estuary coast. The information processing of special subject of remote sensing is discussed in this paper and some practicable methods of computer processing are concluded. The results that information processing of special subject of remote sensing is used on the research of suspended sediment, bathymetry, under-water topography and the dynamic changes in Lingdingyang, such as quantitative patterns of suspended sediment and Preliminary experiment of quantitative analysis of bathymetry in Lingdingyang, are presented in this paper. Multi-phase images processed by computer are also used on the dynamic monitoring of Lingdingyang.

Hainan Island is situated in the tropical zone. In the region there are complicated and varied landforms which mountains and platforms predominate. Urban climate is influenced by the regional climate as well as local microclimate. For urban planning, those comlicated climatic must be considered to be rationally. and fully used. Urban land use and layout should be arranged on the base of the feature of wind direction and the systems of water supply and drains should then be designed according to the rainfall characteristics. Afforestation is also very important for protecting hot weather and creating a nice environment.

The contradictions among population, resources and environment, which began to take effect in modern times, is one striking problem in the development of Hainan Island. In spite of making great success in developing the rubber and tropical plants, the contradictions are becoming increasingly serious and acute because of bringing under cultivation excessively, substituting rubber trees for forest, taking grain as the key link and because of single-product economy, over-growth population and other mistakes of plundering management. They led to biological unbalance and obstructed its economy development and also have been the lesson iri developing Hainan in the last thirty years.
