The Qiongzhou Strait is the third biggest strait In China, The origin of this strait has been the point at issue since early 1960's, The. authors focused their attention on this point when they were examining the coastal Quaternary geology along the western coast of Guangdong Province during 1984-1986, 811 samples of cores and outcrops were analysed by many means of datlngs of 14C,TL, K-Ar, palcomagnetism, and analysts of grain size, trace-element, surface textures of quartzsand,heavy mineral, clay mineral,fossil diatom, foraminifera, ostracoda, shell and sporo-pollen. And the origin of the strait was analysed mainly from the strattgraphic and geomorphologic points of riew, In the period from the late Early Pleistocene to the early Middle Pleistocene, the volcanic eruption formed a lowland between the volcanoes in the south of Leizhou Peninsula and those in the north of Hainan Island.
