It is gradually obvious that the development of industries, communication and transportation in the urban districts of Guangzhou has significant effects on its climate.Studies have shown that such effects have brought about changes in climatic elements, for example, the decrease of sunshine and humidity, the weakening of the solar radiation, and the increase of temperature and precipitation as well as the decrease of wind speed and visibility. This paper discusses the differences of the climatic elements between the urban districts and the suburbs in Guangzhou. The results are summarized in the following table.

Zong Yongqiang (Guangzhou Institute of Geography)The depositional cycles of the Quaternary in the Hanjiang Delta have been distinguished according to the comprehensive facies analysis of 7 tipical bore hole sections and the comparison among the other 13 bore hole sections. The division basis of the depositional cycles, which includes the analysis of fossil diatom,spore-pollen,grain size, trace element and heavy mineral, has been introduced in detail from FIK25 bore hole section as a sample. It has been considered that the Quaternary of the delta is composed of two depositional cycles from land to delta facies and each cycle includes three or four subcy-cles from deita plain to delta front or from delta front to predelta.Regional diversity and chronology of the depositional cycles in this area have been represented and the transgression history of the delta area, which is based on the division result of the depositional cycles, has also been discussed.

Shaoguan City, belonging mainly to the Beijiang River basin and with a catchment area of 30 684KM2,is located at the northern mountainous region of Guangdong Province.Owing to its numerous rivers with plentiful water and high fall heads,Shaoguan is an area with the richest waterpower resources in Guangdong Province. This paper mainly deals with the following problems:1.Waterpower resources and its distributional characteristics. The total theoretical reserve and the total workable reserve of waterpower resources in this city are 2393 800 KW and 1724 200KW respertively, and they are distributed mainly in the middle-lower reaches of the Beijiang River, especially the Wushui River, the Nanshui River and the Lianjiang River. The workable reserve of mentioned above rivers is 998 300KM or 57.9 percent of the total amount.2.The present situation of exploitation and utilization In 1983,536 small hydro-power stations, with a total installed capacity of 236 100KW and an annual gross generation Lof 735 million KW.H,were set up.These stations, dominated with small-scale ones, are now scattered extensively everywhere in Shaoguan city area. Most of these stations are runoff-power stations, having unsteady output.Their social benefits are remarkable, while economic benefits are lower. 3.In order to raise the economic benefits of the small hydropower stations, the author suggests:(1)Carrying out the special guiding principle and policy to run the power stations;(2)Performing the regulative function of the reservoirs well;(3)Strengthening the transformation and construction of the power net;(4)Raising the level of using electricity;(5)Making a success of the regulation of the power stations.

Based on investigation of water conservancy projects and various kinds of water use in the mountain areas of northern Guangdong province, this paper analyses the water,supply-demand balance in different periods.According to calculation, the available amounts of water supply at present (in 1983),in the near future:(in 1990)and in the long-range (in 2000)are 31.43×108M3 41.31×108M3,and 55.13×108M3respectively,while the amounts of water demand 38.02×108M3,45.78×108M3and 57.67×108M3 respectively and the amounts of water lack 6.59×108M3,4.47×108M3and 2.54×108M3 respectively. At present the situation of water lack is very serious because of the lack of water conservancy facilities and poor management. In this area water use is mainly in agriculture and the utilization late of water resources is still very low, only 17.8% of the runoff volume (P=90%).So the potentiality of water use is very remarkable. The water supply could be increased greatly at the long range. However, water demand cannot be met due to the limitation of building conditions in some counties. In order to solve this problem it is necessary to reform the composition of crops in those farmlands which are not under irrigation. The paper also puts forward suggestions on the construction and management of water conservancy pcojec}s and various kinds of water use, which provides a scientific basis for wafer conservancy and construction, development scale of industry and agriculture, and their rational distribution in the mountain areas of northern Guangdong.

The "8607" Flood disaster, caused by the violent No.7 typhoon with torrential rainfall in July,1986,was a very serious one in Meixian adminstrative district,Guangdong province since 1949.Compared with the Flood in June,1960,it can be seen that the calamity of this Flood was much heavier. This was the result of rapidly developing soil erosion. The low standard and poor quality of embankments wihch has been in disrepair and under unskillful management for a long time have also aggravated the disaster. This paper suggusts some countermeasures for flood control useful not only for this stdirict but also for other sinular soil erosion areas.

Haikou Bay,lying in the north of Hainan Island,is a logarithmic spiral-shaped one developed in the last 2 000 years with the evolution of the Nandu River Delta.Since the northeast prevailing wind wave of this bay is refracted and diffracted due to its landform and the tidal current reciprocates between the west and the east of Qiongzhou Strait, the shoreline are approaching an equilibrium at present. In this paper, the author reveals the characteristics of the shore and beach in Haikou Bay from the analysis of dynamics, geomorphology and sedimentation, and suggests some preliminary proposals for the future construction of the harbor in this bay according to the evolutional law of the shore and beach system of logarithmic spiral-shaped bay.

For its unique tropical island characteristics,Hainan tourist potential is of special value. Therefore,Hainan Island is the best place in China to develop tropical tourism. The main types of Hainan tourist resources are:1.Tropical scenery, beaches and flora and fauna;2.Activities of famous people of ancient and recent past;3.Preserves of precious and scarce animals and plants;4.Wide variety of delicacies with special tastes. At present, tourism in Hainan is just beginning, with serious limitations such as tour facilities, service availability and transportation. It is not wise to overtax the tourist resources at present. The develpment in Hainan tourism should therefore seriously follow these principles:1.To emphasize the tropical characteristics and make good use of the available local resources;2.To develop the tourism industry step by step and to control this process in a macro way;3.To carefully combine scenic spots with travelling routes to construct tourist networks;4.To adapt facilities to the requirement of tourism.Proposals are then put forward:to made the first move in Sanya and Haikou with the first step being the construction of swimming facilities at beaches;to enhence the tourist spots along the eastern highway and therefore build up a tourist network in the east coast;to develop selected spots in the middle and western highways to provide tourists with alternative routes up and down the island to make their journey more interesting;to enforce particular policies so that the tourist resources, such as wondcrful animals and plants, special delicacies, and local handicrafts, will be protected, reproduced and manufctured;to build adequate seaport and airport terminals to meet the urgent needs of tourism. The authors predict that six main tourist districts will be established progressively in Hainan Island. These districts are Haikou (including Qiongshan),Sanya (including Lingshui),Warming (including Qionghai,Tongshi,Qinglan and Danxian).
